Home-Based Baking: Custom can cost
Posted in Blog
Consumers who purchase from home-based bakers and food crafters may notice that prices for these goods are slightly higher than those in commercial bakeries and grocery stores. The reason for the higher price often has more to do with the fact the products are custom made, unique, and rarely found in retail stores. A home-based baker who specializes in products like biscotti, Danish pastry, Artisan breads, pepper jelly or dry herb blends selects to share their secret recipe with you and your family because it is a one of kind product.
Paying a bit more for a product that is created to your specification or handmade with the finest chocolate is not unusual. We go to Ruth Chris for steak when we want a “fine” dining experience and we go to Outback when you don’t, do you see the difference. Home-Based bakers and specialty food crafters don’t just give us a fine dining experience, they also produce foods that do not have all the preservatives, additives and artificial flavoring used in commercial food production. Plus food prepared by small food crafters is not created to stay in your pantry for an extended length of time.
The next time you are at a Farmers Market, Flea Market, food stand, food co-op or mobile food truck, bear in mind that the food being served is prepared for you to consume immediately, whether fresh, hot or cold, it is all about taking local food production from kitchen to market.
When was the last time you purchased products from a home-based baker or food crafter?
